The Genesee Valley Chapter, New York Civil Liberties Union, the state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, in conjunction with the MCBA “Dialogue” program, Empire Justice Center, University of Rochester-Warner School of Education, and the John Marshall High School Law Academy, is proud to sponsor the first annual Liberty Conference.  The conference will serve to educate, inspire and empower 400 high school students in the Monroe County area regarding their civil liberties, the law and liberty as a national and international concept.

The all day event that will enable students to hear and respond to notable speakers on topics such as, “What are the essential elements for life in American society? Is a democratic life possible without the Bill of Rights? What is the relationship between freedom and truth?  How can a democratic society balance change and stability? What is the connection between civil liberties and current events?”  In addition, students will participate in facilitated small group workshops designed so they can demonstrate their understanding of one of the core concepts of civil liberties. Transportation will be provided.  For schools outside Monroe County, we anticipate providing a stipend for assistance with transportation costs.

The conference will be open to all high school students (public, private and home schooled) in the Rochester area and surrounding counties.  We welcome students of all levels.  In addition, all of the conference events will be handicapped accessible.
